Thomas and Jack have been working at one of the world’s leading producers of luxury yachts for over ten years between them. They have recently taken the bold step of starting up their own business, Plymouth Carpentry. Sticking to their roots in woodwork and carpentry, Tom and Jack offer bespoke carpentry and joinery as their main service. Their services don’t stop there, they also offer a kitchen and bathroom fitting service along with general property maintenance with all types of maintenance considered. When Lisa Hackett decided to take her own dietary issues in hand, little did she know that it would provide the ingredients for a new Plymouth business. We caught up with Lisa for Start-up Stories and asked her all about it. Where did it all begin?  I have an auto immune health problem which means that I have had to cut a number of foods out of my diet. In particular wheat and gluten. I also have to be careful with the amount of dairy I eat. I soon found that the supermarket free from section was not only very limited in choice but what you could get was of a very poor quality. The crunch came on my birthday. Friends came around with a selection of cakes which looked so tempting. Less than a year ago, Abi Noall gave up a career in management to pursue her dream of making luxury chocolate cakes, here in Plymouth. Now her new business, the aptly named My Fabulous Cakes is showing signs of sweet success. Early Beginnings The roots of her business run deep into Abi’s past. As a child she loved to cook and in particular, to bake. She says: “Taking a recipe and creating something new out of a few basic ingredients used to thrill me. Did I really make that?” However, her school careers advisor steered her away from a career as a chef. After being told that she was “too bright to be a chef” Abi was pushed into a management career where she spent much of her working life.
